GOOD MORNING BELOVED!

Welcome to another edition of the SJMBC Podcast:

“HOW IMPORTANT IS THE WORD OF GOD TO YOU

WHEN IT COMES TO . . . ?”

I am your host Brother Henry Cotton, Jr. and I am also the Pastor of the SJMBC. Welcome to our Podcast. The topic for our Podcast today is:

HOW IMPORTANT IS THE WORD OF GOD TO YOU WHEN IT COMES TO . . . TRAINING A CHILD?

The children now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise.

This quote is traditionally attributed to Socrates or Plato. When we look at how our children are behaving today, consider that Socrates and Plato lived in the 5th and 4th centuries BCE; so much for thinking that the behaviors of our children is something new.

What does this imply? Does it imply that the behaviors of children seem to have always fit a pattern? If so, can this pattern be changed? When we look in the word of God, the book of Proverbs speaks about training a child:

Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it. Proverbs 22:6 (KJV)

In the Hebrew, this means (expound):

2596 chanak khaw-nak’ a primitive root; properly, to narrow (Compare 2614); figuratively, to initiate or discipline:–dedicate, train up

Even though I love the way the King James Version of this passage reads, I think the New International Version of this same verse might make it a little clearer for some:

Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it. Proverbs 22:6 (NIV)

I don’t believe that this is implying that even though parents may train their children to govern themselves in the right way as they are growing up; they will always live in the way they were trained; I believe that this passage of scripture, along with other passages, let’s us realize that if children are trained up in the right way, having the “Free Will” that they do, it will take a conscience effort for them to depart from their training because it will always be in them (expound).
