GOOD MORNING BELOVED!

Welcome to another edition of the SJMBC Podcast:

“HOW IMPORTANT IS THE WORD OF GOD TO YOU

WHEN IT COMES TO . . . ?”

I am your host Brother Henry Cotton, Jr. and I am also the Pastor of the SJMBC. Welcome to our Podcast. The topic for our Podcast today is:

HOW IMPORTANT IS THE WORD OF GOD TO YOU WHEN IT COMES TO . . . BEING THE HUSBAND OF ONE WIFE?

There is a lot being said about pastors these days; some good and some not so good. It seems like every time we turn around there is a pastor being publicized for doing something wrong, sinful, or just outright ungodly! Society starts looking at this “Pastor” and judging him. But should he be the only one put under the microscope and subjected to scrutiny?

Did the local church perform their due diligence (as the scriptures dictate) in choosing this person to be their pastor? The books of 1 Timothy and Titus record clear instructions on the qualifications for being the pastor of the local church. Part of the problem with these so-called pastors with unseemly behaviors is that their qualifications were not checked. When we choose people for other jobs we check their qualifications; how come no one used the qualification checklist that the Bible provides to choose the pastor? There are many issues surrounding pastors today. The Devil is very good at not holding the church accountable in their choice of pastors,, because that would give the Bible too much credibility.

We are going to start a series of Podcasts and Bible studies looking at the qualifications of Pastors. Today we are going to look at one that is often discussed . . . Women Pastors! I am sure that this topic is going to cause quite a stir with some people, but if we look at the scriptures and not “lean to our own understanding,” I believe that we will truly be enlightened. Having said that, let us look at the qualification for the Pastor:

BEING THE HUSBAND OF ONE WIFE

“This is a true saying, if a man desires the office of a bishop, he desireth a good work. A bishop then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober, of good behavior, given to hospitality, apt to teach.” 1 Timothy‬ 3‬:1‬-2‬ (KJV)

“Here is a trustworthy saying: Whoever aspires to be an overseer desires a noble task. 2 Now the overseer is to be above reproach, faithful to his wife.”                                    1 Timothy‬ 3‬:1‬-2‬ (NIV)

We will see why this qualification stirs up so much trouble with society and the church!

“For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that are wanting, and ordain elders in every city, as I had appointed thee: if any be blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children not accused of riot or unruly. For a bishop must be blameless, as the steward of God;” Titus‬ 1‬:5‬-7 (KJV)‬‬

The reason I left you in Crete was that you might put in order what was left unfinished and appoint elders in every town, as I directed you. 6 An elder must be blameless, faithful to his wife, a man whose children believe and are not open to the charge of being wild and disobedient. 7 Since an overseer manages God’s household, he must be blameless        Titus‬ 1‬:5‬-7 (NIV)
