What Does It Mean to Be a Neighbor?
When we think about neighbors, we often picture the people living next door or down the street. But according to God’s Word, being a neighbor means much more than sharing a neighborhood.
In this St. James Missionary Baptist Church podcast message, Pastor Henry Cotton asks an important question: How important is the Word of God to you when it comes to being a neighbor to someone?
Drawing from Luke 10:30–37, Pastor Cotton examines Jesus’ parable of the Good Samaritan. While others passed by a wounded man, the Samaritan stopped, showed compassion, cared for his injuries, and made arrangements for his continued recovery.
His actions remind us that being a neighbor is not simply about who lives near us. It is about how we respond when someone needs help.
Compassion Must Lead to Action
Pastor Cotton highlights four lessons from the Samaritan’s example:
- Recognize the need. Pay attention when someone is struggling, whether physically, emotionally, or spiritually.
- Do what you can. Helping does not always require money. Sometimes a conversation, a phone call, or connecting someone with available resources makes a difference.
- Help without judgment. Do not allow someone’s background, circumstances, or appearance to become a reason to withhold compassion.
- Consider what happens next. When possible, help ensure that someone receives continued assistance rather than leaving them without support.
The lesson is simple but challenging: genuine compassion considers what another person actually needs, not merely what makes us feel that we have helped.
Go and Do Likewise
Jesus concludes the parable with a direct instruction:
“Go, and do thou likewise.” — Luke 10:37 (KJV)
Pastor Cotton reminds us that opportunities to demonstrate God’s love are all around us. We may not be able to solve every problem, but we can respond with compassion and offer the help within our ability.
Are we simply passing people along the way, or are we showing ourselves to be neighbors?
