Wednesday Night Bible Study: DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES ARE AS A CHRISTIAN

St James Missionary Baptist Church Wednesday Night Bible Study 2/18/2026

Question: “DO YOU KNOW WHAT YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES ARE AS A CHRISTIAN IN THE MIDST OF ALL THE WORLD’S TROUBLES?

The amount of crimes to society is at all time high all around our nation and the world. The divorce rate is steadily climbing among the Christian as well as the non-Christian communities. The morals of the people seem to be non-existent in so many communities. This list goes on and on.

However, in the midst of all these things that are going on in the world, there is the rumbling of people asking “WHERE IS THE CHURCH WHILE ALL THIS IS HAPPENING?” Before those of us who are part of the church as described in the Holy Bible get defensive; I think we need to take note of a couple of things:

  1. Who is asking the question?
  2. Who are they referring to when they say “Church?”
  3. Do you know what your responsibility as a member of the church is?

At this time, we want to look at what the Word of GOD has to say about this. Prior to His leaving them, Jesus gave a definitive command to HIS church. This command is found in Matthew 28:19-20:

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.

  • “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations.” (v.19) – Jesus is now talking to His “called out ones . . . the church!” The church is being commissioned and commanded to do a particular task. Jesus is not calling for volunteers or for the people of the world to fulfill this command; He is calling for His people. This is not the first time the LORD directed a challenge to His people. Take note of what the LORD said to Solomon in 2 Chronicles 7:14: “if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”
  • “Baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” (v.19) – Once a person or people becomes a disciple of Jesus, then they will become baptized.

“Teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you.” (v.20) – Take note that the church has not just commanded to teach disciples the same commandments that they have been given, but they have been commanded to teach new disciples TO OBEY THEM.

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15 (NIV)
