GOOD MORNING BELOVED!
Welcome to this special edition of the SJMBC Podcast:
“HOW IMPORTANT IS THE WORD OF GOD TO YOU
WHEN IT COMES TO . . . ?”
I am your host Brother Henry Cotton, Jr. and I am also the Pastor of the SJMBC. Welcome to our Podcast. We will be broadcasting every day during this Holy Week Celebration by remembering Jesus “Seven Last Words from the Cross.” The topic for our Podcast today is:
“HOW IMPORTANT IS THE WORD OF GOD TO YOU WHEN IT COMES TO . . . THE WORD OF FORGIVENESS!”
As Jesus hung on the cross in excruciating pain; having been beaten and bloodied, the Bible singles out seven last phrases (or words) that Jesus spoke. The first word was:
“Father, Forgive Them, For They Know Not What They Do.” Luke 23:34
Here was GOD’S only begotten Son; crucified after having been beaten and whipped , spat upon, his hairs pulled from his face, and even forced to wear a crown of thorns. Isaiah prophesied about this event many years prior to Jesus’ walking among men. This is how he described it:
“See, my servant will act wisely; he will be raised and lifted up and highly exalted. 14 Just as there were many who were appalled at him — his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any human being and his form marred beyond human likeness.” Isaiah 52: 13-14 (NIV)
Even after going through all of that Jesus still prayed that His Father would forgive the ones who perpetrated and did this to Him . . . WOW! I know that many people saw this act portrayed on film and found it difficult to watch without coming to tears; try to imagine Jesus Father seeing what men have done to HIS Son and then having HIS Son ask HIM to Forgive them for doing it!
When you say the “Our Father” prayer, and you get to the part that says:
“For if you forgive other people when they sin against you, your heavenly Father will also forgive you.15 But if you do not forgive others their sins, your Father will not forgive your sins.” Matthew 6:14-15 (NIV)
Jesus not only teaches and preaches us to perform this . . . He lived it and died on the cross to show us that even when situations are at their worst, there is still room for forgiveness!
