When we think about God, we often picture Him as all-powerful, holy, and righteous. But how often do we consider His compassion, His love, and His understanding of our emotions?
In his Sunday sermon, “Our Emotional God,” Pastor Henry Cotton of St. James Missionary Baptist Church invites believers to look beyond the image of a distant, stern God and recognize the personal, caring nature revealed throughout Scripture.
Through John 3:16, Pastor Cotton reminds us that God’s love is more than words. It was demonstrated through the greatest gift of all: His only begotten Son, Jesus Christ.
A God Who Understands Our Feelings
The Bible tells us in John 11:35, “Jesus wept.”
Those two words reveal something powerful about our Savior. Jesus experienced sorrow, just as we do.
Pastor Cotton also turns to Hebrews 2 and 4 to explain how Jesus, fully God and fully human, experienced suffering and temptation without sin. Because of this, believers can approach God’s throne of grace knowing they will find mercy and help in times of need.
God is not indifferent to our struggles. He knows us, understands us, and calls us to draw near to Him.
Love, Mercy, and the Call to Salvation
Pastor Cotton also emphasizes that God’s compassion does not diminish His holiness or His judgment.
The same God who offers grace and mercy calls each person to receive Jesus Christ and experience the new birth.
God’s love is real. His mercy is available. And His invitation to salvation remains.
