Text – Matthew 8:5-10; Hebrews 11:5-6

“ When Jesus had entered Capernaum, a centurion came to him, asking for help. 6 “Lord,” he said, “my servant lies at home paralyzed, suffering terribly.” 7 Jesus said to him, “Shall I come and heal him?” 8 The centurion replied, “Lord, I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. But just say the word, and my servant will be healed. 9 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and that one, ‘Come,’ and he comes. I say to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.” 10 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed and said to those following him, Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with such great faith. “ Matthew 8:5-10 (NIV)

AMAZED1839 eksístēmi (from 1537, ek, “out of,” and 2476, histēmi, “to stand”) – literally, “to remove from a standing (fixed) position,” put out of place; i.e. beside oneself, showing someone as flabbergasted (completely stupefied); at a total loss to explain or account for something; overwhelmed, astonished (amazed).

“By faith Enoch was translated that he should not see death; and was not found, because God had translated him: for before his translation he had this testimony, that he pleased God. 6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him. Hebrews 11:5-6 (KJV)

INTRODUCTION –

One might want to ask him or herself what could make the One who has been since the beginning, who made the stars, the moons, the planets . . . everything! Who has made time go forward, backwards, and even stand still, who created life, and who has even brought the dead back to life; who has performed countless healings and miracles, and is Omnipotent, Omnipresent, and Omniscient, be amazed? (Expound).

Let me talk to you a little bit today around the subject:

“WHAT GOT JESUS BESIDES HIMSELF?”

POINTS –

  • (Verses 5-9) – Take note of how Jesus set the stage for this dialogue in verse 7. The centurion’s response was for the benefit of those following Jesus at the time (expound).
  • (Verse 10) – Jesus’ response was for the benefit of those following Him at the time as well as for us today (expound).

CONCLUSION –

Being God, we know that nothing happens that surprises Jesus. However, when Jesus walked on earth in the flesh, He showed a lot of the same emotions as any other man.
