Text – Matthew 28:19-20
The following passage of scripture is commonly referred to as “The Great Commission.”
17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make DISCIPLES of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit*, 20 and TEACHING THEM TO OBEY everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:17-20 (NIV)
*It is implied that once they have been born again (expound).
INTRODUCTION
Remember in the book of Revelation 2:2-5 where the Lord let the church in Ephesus know that despite all of the good things they were doing, they had forsaken their first love? This is all to prevalent in many of our churches today. I’m sorry to say, but there are too many churches trying “bring in” people, instead of trying to bring in DISCIPLES! (Expound).
The Lord has given us the perfect plan; why do we think it is necessary to deviate from it to make it better? For some reason, many of us think that we need to do something different for this generation, than what was done for us! Sure, there are a number of traditional things that were done in our churches (and still are), but there were also many theologically sound doctrinal teachings done as well.
When someone does come to accept the Lord and/or desire to “join the church,” many churches feel that they need to get that person involved in some active auxiliary (today we call them Ministries) of the church. This is PARTLY true. We want to look into this a little more as talk around the subject: “WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO NOW?”
POINTS
- “. . . go and make DISCIPLES of all nations“ (v.19) – We need to take note of several points here:
- Jesus is talking to disciples. Jesus is letting His disciples know that they are to go and replicate themselves; this help to keep believers on their toes (expound).
- “GO” doesn’t necessarily mean that every Disciple/Follower of Jesus is to go out on the mission field. The Lord may send you to a local church, a fellowship, a ministry, etc. Make sure that if the Lord sends you somewhere that you do not leave until He says so (expound).
- Jesus didn’t tell His disciples to go and get “Members” or to go and “Make” members, Jesus said to go and make others like yourselves; and do not discriminate, but go to every race, culture, nationality, etc. This lets our local churches know that their doors should be open to everyone (expound).
- “BAPTIZING them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.“ (v.19) – It appears that after they have accepted the Lord and have become Disciples of Jesus, the first order of business is to baptize them (expound).
- “And TEACHING THEM TO OBEY everything I have commanded you. “ (v.20) – The next order of business is to teach them the Lord’s ways and how follow them (expound).
CONCLUSION
For that new convert, and for that Believer who is saying that they know or they have been told that there is a calling on their life, I have two things to say to you. One, if you feel that there is a particular calling on your life to help up build the kingdom of God, continue seeking the Lord about it. Meanwhile, be diligent about that calling as the word says in 2 Peter 1:10 (Some say this verse only pertains to salvation, but I disagree).
Second, every Disciple of Jesus has been commissioned and commanded to do their part in bringing about Matthew 28. So while you are waiting to find “YOUR” calling, you should be about helping to fulfill the dictates of The Great Commission.
