THE POSITION THE CHURCH SHOULD TAKE WHEN IT COMES TO COMMUNITY ISSUES?

PODCAST TOPIC:  “HOW IMPORTANT IS THE WORD OF GOD TO YOU WHEN IT COMES TO . . .

THE POSITION THE CHURCH SHOULD TAKE WHEN IT COMES TO COMMUNITY ISSUES?

I understand that there are a number of issues that may be labeled as “COMMUNITY ISSUES.” I also realize that I do not speak for the church. However, as a Believer and follower of the Lord Jesus Christ, this makes me a member of the church and I am speaking from how I see the word of God directing me to respond to this question.

Living in the urban area of Philadelphia, there are a number of  “Community Issues” that the people in the community face on a daily basis; everything from Home Invasions to Violent Acts. I am sure that it is not just Philadelphia or any of the other large cities in America, but there are community issues in every city. But the question still remains:

“HOW IMPORTANT IS THE WORD OF GOD TO YOU WHEN IT COMES TO . . .

THE POSITION THE CHURCH SHOULD TAKE WHEN IT COMES TO COMMUNITY ISSUES?

Before I try addressing this issue directly, I think that I want to remind folks to what I want to call the church’s first directive:

Therefore go and make disciples of all nationsbaptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Matthew 28:19-20 (NIV)

I think that the first thing the church needs to remember is their number one priority (EXPOUND).  Believers need to always remember what the word of God says:

“The righteous will live by faith.” Romans 1:17 (NIV)

“Consequently, faith comes from hearing the message, and the message is heard through the word about Christ.” Romans 10:17 (NIV)

I am aware that Believers should show the same type of spirit that the Good Samaritan did. I also know that when the Lord’s House is being desecrated, Believers should not hesitate to take action against those who would dare do so.

But also take notice of when and how the Lord took action (expound). I don’t think that the church has to change from its prime directive in order to help meet the needs of its’ community. On the contrary, I think that if the church is doing what the word of God is saying it should do, then the community will reap the benefits of the what church is teaching.
