GOOD MORNING BELOVED!
Welcome to another edition of the SJMBC Podcast:
“HOW IMPORTANT IS THE WORD OF GOD TO YOU
WHEN IT COMES TO . . . ?”
I am your host Brother Henry Cotton, Jr. and I am also the Pastor of the SJMBC. Welcome to Podcast number 20. The topic for our Podcast today is:
“HOW IMPORTANT IS THE WORD OF GOD TO YOU WHEN IT COMES TO . . . KEEPING YOUR WORD?”
Some of us came up in a time when if person said they were going to do something, and if there was a question whether or not he or she would do it; if the person said: “MY WORD IS MY BOND!” that would be enough to go on. That statement, or even a handshake meant a whole lot. But what about today? Not even written contracts mean anything today because every time we turn around people are finding ways to get out of them. This even includes sports, businesses, and even marriages (expound).
Keeping your word is in the same category as keeping a promise, or keeping your commitment. I wonder if there are any scriptures that address this issue? Tell me what you think of the following verses:
“A good name is more desirable than great riches; to be esteemed is better than silver or gold.” Proverbs 22:1 (NIV)
“Again, you have heard that it was said to the people long ago, ‘Do not break your oath, but fulfill to the Lord the vows you have made.’ 34 But I tell you, do not swear an oath at all: either by heaven, for it is God’s throne; 35 or by the earth, for it is his footstool; or by Jerusalem, for it is the city of the Great King. 36 And do not swear by your head, for you cannot make even one hair white or black. 37 All you need to say is simply ‘Yes’ or ‘No’; anything beyond this comes from the evil one. “ Matthew 5:33-37 (NIV)
As we can see, GOD places a high value on a person’s integrity. (Expound and conclude).
