GOOD MORNING BELOVED!
Welcome to a special edition of the SJMBC Podcast:
“THE SEVEN LAST WORDS OF CHRIST FROM THE CROSS.”
We are also looking at these as “Acts of Love.” John 3:16 (NIV) states: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” It is in the spirit of this verse that we look at these seven acts/words of love.
“HOW IMPORTANT IS THE WORD OF GOD TO YOU
WHEN IT COMES TO . . . ?”
I am your host Brother Henry Cotton, Jr. and I am also the Pastor of the SJMBC. Welcome to Podcast number 19. The topic for our Podcast today is:
The Word of Contentment . . .
Jesus cried out in a loud voice,
“Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.”
Gospel of Luke 23:46
This is the final statement that we have from Jesus before His death. Everything had been completed and now it was time to dismiss His spirit. Jesus had previously made the statement that He would willingly lay down His life for His sheep:
“Just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep. 17 The reason my Father loves me is that I lay down my life—only to take it up again. 18 No one takes it from me, but I lay it down of my own accord. I have authority to lay it down and authority to take it up again. This command I received from my Father. “
The seventh word of Jesus is from the Gospel of Luke, and is directed to the Father in heaven. Just before Jesus dismisses His spirit, Jesus recites Psalm 31:5:
“Into thy hands I commend my spirit; thou hast redeemed me, O Lord, faithful God.”
And He can return: “I came from the Father and have come into the world; again, I am leaving the world and going to the Father” John 16:28 (NIV)
Jesus was obedient to His Father to the end; even recognizing that even though it was the man Jesus who went through all that pain and suffering for man, it was His Father who was in charge and it was His Father who released Him from the agreement that they had made, that Jesus would go to earth and provide the way of salvation for man.
The relationship of Jesus to the Father is revealed in the Gospel of John, for He remarked, “I and my Father are one.“ (John10:30), and again, at the Last Supper:
“Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you I do not speak on my own authority. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work.“ John 14:10 NIV
Jesus fulfills His own mission and that of His Father on the Cross:
“For God so loved the world that he gave his only Son,
So that everyone who believes in him may not perish but have eternal life.
John 3:16 (NIV)
