GOOD MORNING BELOVED!

Welcome to a special edition of the SJMBC Podcast:

“THE SEVEN LAST WORDS OF CHRIST FROM THE CROSS.”

We are also looking at these as “Acts of Love.” John 3:16 (NIV) states: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” It is in the spirit of this verse that we look at these seven acts/words of love.

“HOW IMPORTANT IS THE WORD OF GOD TO YOU

WHEN IT COMES TO . . . ?”

I am your host Brother Henry Cotton, Jr. and I am also the Pastor of the SJMBC. Welcome to Podcast number 17. The topic for our Podcast today is:

The Word of Suffering . . .

“Later, knowing that everything had now been finished, and so that Scripture would be fulfilled, Jesus said, “’I am thirsty.’” John 19:28 (NIV)

The fifth word of Jesus is His only human expression of His physical suffering, and it is only recorded in John’s gospel.  Having done everything that He came to earth to do, Jesus is now hanging on the cross.

Jesus is now finally allowing Himself to focus on the wounds inflicted upon him. The scourging, the crowning with thorns and being nailed upon the cross are now taking their toll. Even with all the blood that Jesus lost as a result of His beatings, He still had to take the three-hour walk through the city of Jerusalem to Golgotha on the Way of the Cross.

Now Jesus is once again showing us His human side. Jesus would definitely be thirsty having gone through everything that He did. It could also be argued that Jesus was talking about a thirst that went deeper than the physical. It kind of reminds us of the woman at the well who wanted the “Living” water Jesus told her that He could give her (John 4:7-10).

Jesus is showing us how He feels. Jesus has been pouring out His spirit in providing for others and now He is showing the world that He is just like us when it comes to suffering. Along with being physically thirsty, could Jesus also be longing to have His thirst quenched with the same precious water that would have left the woman at the well satisfied?
