GOOD MORNING BELOVED!
Welcome to another edition of the SJMBC Podcast:
“HOW IMPORTANT IS THE WORD OF GOD TO YOU
WHEN IT COMES TO . . . ?”
I am your host Brother Henry Cotton, Jr. and I am also the Pastor of the SJMBC. Welcome to Podcast number 15. The topic for our Podcast today is:
“HOW IMPORTANT IS THE WORD OF GOD TO YOU WHEN IT COMES TO . . .”
The Seven Last Words of Christ from the Cross. We are also looking at these as “Acts of Love.” John 3:16 (NIV) states: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” It is in the spirit of this verse that we look at these seven acts/words of love. The third word being . . .
The Word of Affection . . .
“Jesus said to his mother: “Woman, this is your son.”
Then he said to the disciple: “This is your mother.”
Gospel of John 19:25-27
The Lord refers to his mother as woman at the Wedding Feast of Cana (John 2:1-11) and once again here in this passage. Even though it would not be vulgar to call our mother “Madam” in our culture, Jesus calling His mother “woman” might be the equivalent of saying Madam to Mary. There are four at the foot of the cross, Mary his Mother, John, the disciple whom he loved, Mary of Cleopas, his mother’s sister, and Mary Magdalene. I contend that Jesus was telling Mary to look at the one to whom you can be a mother to from now on (expound).
I think that we also need to point out that Jesus had at least two sisters, and four brothers (James, Joses, Judas, and Simon)
“Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, the brother of James, and Joses, and of Judas, and Simon? And are not his sisters here with us? And they were offended at him. “
Mark 6:3 (KJV)
“Isn’t this the carpenter’s son? Isn’t his mother’s name Mary, and aren’t his brothers James, Joseph, Simon and Judas? 56 Aren’t all his sisters with us? “ Matthew 13:55-56 (KJV)
Jesus made sure that His mother was taken care of. It would seem that between Jesus’ brothers and sisters, at least one of Mary’s children should have stepped up to take care of their mother! And yet Jesus chose to leave Mary with His beloved disciple John. Anybody here know that a friend can often times be closer than a brother?
But once again Jesus rises to the occasion. The loving son that He is, Jesus is concerned about taking care of his mother and His disciple John. You see, Mary was a mother in need of a son, and John was a son in need of a mother:
“Jesus said to his mother: “Woman, this is your son.”
Then he said to the disciple: “This is your mother.”
