GOOD MORNING BELOVED!
Welcome to another edition of the SJMBC Podcast:
“HOW IMPORTANT IS THE WORD OF GOD TO YOU
WHEN IT COMES TO . . . ?”
I am your host Brother Henry Cotton, Jr. and I am also the Pastor of the SJMBC. Welcome to our Podcast. The topic for our Podcast today is:
“HOW IMPORTANT IS THE WORD OF GOD TO YOU WHEN IT COMES TO . . . GIVING SOMEONE THEIR PROPER DUE?”
I was raised to say “yes sir or no sir” to adults and to put a Mr. or Mrs. on their name (unless another title was appropriate). When I was in the service we had to address a superior officer as “Sir,” and/or we had to salute them. We are expected to address people in various positions similarly, or by their positions (Chef, Doctor, Coach, Captain, etc.)
We call that “Giving Someone Their Proper Due.” It does not matter how you might feel about another person personally, you are still expected to respect them and the position they hold. This what “Honoring” someone means. Honor is based on how you govern yourself. You might be the child of a notorious criminal, but how you live your life may bring respect/honor to the family name. The Lord expects His followers to do no less. Let us look at a few passages of scripture to what the word of God has to say about this:
“Honor your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise “
Exodus 20:12 (KJV); Ephesians 6:2 (NIV)
“Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in Honour preferring one another.“ Romans 12:10 (KJV)
” If it is possible, as far as it depends on you, live at peace with everyone. “
Romans 12:18 (NIV)
“Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor. “ Romans 13:7 (NIV)
“Show proper respect to everyone, love the family of believers, fear God, honor the emperor. “ 1 Peter 2:17 (NIV)
