GOOD MORNING BELOVED!

Welcome to another edition of the SJMBC Podcast:

“HOW IMPORTANT IS THE WORD OF GOD TO YOU

WHEN IT COMES TO . . . ?”

I am your host Brother Henry Cotton, Jr. and I am also the Pastor of the SJMBC. Welcome to our Podcast. The topic for our Podcast today is:

HOW IMPORTANT IS THE WORD OF GOD TO YOU WHEN IT COMES TO . . . HALLOWEEN?” (Part Two)

According to “Google,” Halloween may not be celebrated more than all of the other holidays, but it is one of the biggest celebrated ones, especially in the U.S. It is second only to Christmas in terms of spending and is highly popular, though Christmas is still considered the most popular holiday overall. Halloween is third with 15%. Halloween is the second biggest commercial holiday in the U.S., after Christmas.

There are a number of holidays celebrated in the U.S. so many people may not even bother celebrating; for example: Groundhog Day Lincoln’s Birthday Valentine’s Day  Mardi Gras St Patrick’s Day April Fools’ Day Earth Day Administrative Professionals Day World Laughter Day Armed Forces Day Flag Day Parents’ Day Grandparents’ Day Stepfamily Day Citizenship Day Native American Day Boss’s Day Sweetest Day Annual Great American Smoke out Black Friday Festivus

I know that some of these are kind of popular, but they are not nearly as widely celebrated as many other Holidays. My question is with so many other holidays to choose from, why are Christians choosing Halloween to celebrate? Just because a day is celebrated by so many people in the world, why must Halloween be one that so many Christians celebrate? I hope that it is not because they have fallen victim of the pressure of society’s expectations! Can Christian parents be feeling that because they went “Trick or Treating?” when they were young it’s alright for their children to do it now?

Need I remind you that for whatever reasons our parents (or us) allowed our children to participate in the Halloween Rituals, that doesn’t mean we have to now?

But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever. Amen. 2 Peter 3:18

Just because our parents or we may not have known what the word of God had to say about the rituals and practices of Halloween when it comes to Christians before, as we have increased in our knowledge of God’s word we are expected to govern ourselves accordingly:

If you belonged to the world, it would love you as its own. As it is, you do not belong to the world, but I have chosen you out of the world. That is why the world hates you.              John 15:19 (NIV)

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 (NIV)

I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. 15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. 17 Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. 19 For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified. 20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message.John 17:14-20 (NIV)

Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is; his good, pleasing and perfect will. Romans 12:2

As Believers in the Lord Jesus Christ, let us always be reminded as to WHO and WHOSE we are, and to always maintain the importance of God’s word in our living!
