Text – Psalm‬ 90‬:9‬-12‬; Matthew‬ 6‬:11

All our days pass away under your wrath; we finish our years with a moan. 10 Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty, if our strength endures; yet the best of them are but trouble and sorrow, for they quickly pass, and we fly away. 11 If only we knew the power of your anger! Your wrath is as great as the fear that is your due. 12 Teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom. Psalm‬ 90‬:9‬-12‬ (NIV)

“Give us this day our daily bread.” Matthew‬ 6‬:11‬ (KJV)‬‬

INTRODUCTION –

Today is a day that many of us hold dear; this is the day that we in America celebrate as “Mother’s Day!” We like to extend special honor to our Mothers on this day. We give our Mothers gifts on this day, we do special things for our Mothers on this day, many of us even go to church with (on in honor of) our Mothers on this day. So this is a special day for many of us.

There is a good thing about recognizing this day to honor our Mothers, but there is also a drawback to this day. The good thing is the fact that we do set aside a special day to recognize our Mothers. The drawback is that for many of us, this is the only day that we truly recognize our mother (expound).

Don’t misunderstand me, even though my birth mother is no longer here, I am glad that there is a day in our country that the government set aside to recognize and honor Mothers. This kind of leads me into what the message is about today. Our message is focusing on the subject . . . “GIVE US THIS DAY!”

POINTS –

In the Old Testament book of Psalms, we are encouraged to pay attention to our days:

  • We finish our years with a moan. (v. 9) – This kind of makes us think of the days when we grow old and our bodies begin to feel the days that have gone by (expound).
  • Our days may come to seventy years, or eighty . . . (v. 10) – We are not guaranteed, but many of us believe that the Lord has set aside at least these many days for His followers, but some of us do things to shorten these days (expound).
  • Teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom. (v. 12) – Are we to understand that knowing that our days are numbered, we should always keep the fact that those days are fleeting, and that we should use each one wisely? (Expound).

As we look into the New Testament book of Matthew, we are encouraged to look at our days differently:

  • Give us this day our daily bread. “ (v. 11) – Like in the book of Psalms, we are encouraged to include the brethren in our prayer. However, in this New Testament book, the Believer is encouraged to pray for “Daily Bread!” (Expound).

There are things about a day that we take for granted; For instance:

  • There are 365 DAYS in a year.
  • There are 28-31 DAYS in a month.
  • There are 24 hours in a DAY.
  • There are 1440 minutes in a 24-hour DAY.
  • There are 86,400 seconds in 1 DAY.

You can stay in bed, be knocked out, or even be in a coma; you still cannot save time to add to the next day. It does not matter if you are a King, Monarch, President, or any other kind of ruler or authority figure, you still cannot obtain even another second to add to your day.

You might be a Millionaire, Billionaire, or even the wealthiest person in the world, but not even you can buy another second to add to your day. When the Lord encourages us to pray for what we need daily, this is also letting us know:

  • To do this when we wake up (meaning we’ve been blessed with another day).
  • Talk to the Lord when we first get up.
  • Ask the Lord to give us what we need to sustain us this day. Sustenance is not just Physical need; remember that we are to seek FIRST the Kingdom of GOD!

CONCLUSION –

So beloved, even though this is not a “Traditional” Mother’s Day message, I hope you understand that you should take a day that you have been blessed to participate in, for granted; especially one that is meant to honor the one person on earth that can never be replaced in your life! I also hope you realize just how special each day we get to experience should be to us. (Expound and conclude).
