GOOD MORNING BELOVED!
Welcome to another edition of the SJMBC Podcast:
“HOW IMPORTANT IS THE WORD OF GOD TO YOU
WHEN IT COMES TO . . . ?”
I am your host Brother Henry Cotton, Jr. and I am also the Pastor of the SJMBC. Welcome to our Podcast. The topic for our Podcast today is:
“HOW IMPORTANT IS THE WORD OF GOD TO YOU WHEN IT COMES TO . . . BEING SAVED AND SAVING YOUR HOUSEHOLD?”
There is passage of scripture concerning a person’s salvation which is being misinterpreted and misunderstood by a lot of people: They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved—you and your household.” Acts 16:31 (NIV). There are people who believe that this passage means that because this man believed in Jesus every member of his household became saved!
Now I know that many of you who are mature in the word of God are saying that any Believer with a basic understanding of the word of God knows that this is not what the text is saying or implying (Exegesis over Eisegesis). The Holy Bible does not teach or promote “Group Salvation.” Being “saved” or “born again” is an individual’s decision (expound). One can lead another person to Jesus where he/she will have the opportunity to receive the Lord Jesus Christ (expound).
I want to not only look deeper into Acts 16:31, but as is our custom, I want to point out a couple of other passages of scripture that should help shed more light on this subject:
“He then brought them out and asked, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” 31 They replied, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved —you and your household.” 32 Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. 33 At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his household were baptized. 34 The jailer brought them into his house and set a meal before them; he was filled with joy because he had come to believe in God—he and his whole household.” Acts 16: 30-34 (NIV)
Take note that the man and his household were given the word of God and then they believed and were baptized!
“He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation.16 Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.” Mark 16:15-16 (NIV)
“If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” Romans 10:9-10 (NIV)
So as evidenced by scripture, the man and his household were saved through the preaching of the word of God. What took place with jailer and his household concerning salvation, was consistent with what is taught in the Holy Bible. Of course there are other scriptures that can be included with the few that we have shared; but we hope that these scriptures will prompt you to seek an even deeper understanding to look into the word of God!
